Canadian punk trio White Lung have announced plans to release a brand new album, their fourth album and second on Domino Records. The album, titled Paradise, will be released on May 6th and the group will be touring extensively to support the album – announced shows can be seen below.
The group has shared the first single from the album, “Hungry” and its accompanying video. Paradise will run a total of 28 minutes, but as demonstrated by the lead single, “Hungry”, there will be a lot to cover in the album. The track moves at a break-neck speed, and the video stars actress Amber Tamblyn as a model/brand spokesperson struggling with self-obsession and delusion.
The group reconnected in Los Angeles for the making of Paradise, working with producer Lars Stalfors (HEALTH, Cold War Kids, Alice Glass) challenging their songwriting and bringing a pop sensibility to their recording. Says guitarist Kenneth William of the new album, “I wanted a record that sounded like it was made in 2016.” Paradise promises to be the band’s brightest and smartest album to date.
Kenneth William and vocalist Mish Barber-Way sat down with Annie Clark – a.k.a. St. Vincent – to discuss the new album, a full transcript of the chat can be found here. Barber-Way gave a great analogy on the album and the band’s music:
“There’s this really stupid attitude that only punks have where it’s somehow uncool to become a better songwriter. In no other musical genre are your fans going to drop you when you start progressing. That would be like parents being disappointed in their child for graduating from kindergarten to the first grade. Paradise is the best song writing we have ever done, and I expect the next record to be the same. I have no interest in staying in kindergarten.”
