Courtney Barnett recently released her album Sometimes I Sit And Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit, to rave reviews and a surge of album sales, debuting in the Billboard Top 10 the week it was released. Today, she shares the video for her favorite song off the album, “Kim’s Caravan” which will also be released as a special 12″ for Record Store Day.
Barnett says about the song:
“Kim’s Caravan is an apocalyptic tale of our world painted black with oil and soot, painted red with blood and greed. The song was born when blessed with time to reflect, feeling the frustration and helplessness of the destruction of my environment and the litter of humans within it. It was partly inspired by watching Black Rain Falls, a documentary about Midnight Oil’s concerts out the front of the Exxon building in NYC in 1990.”
The video (above) is conceptually similar, with director Bec Kingma portraying the lyrics through a film segment about an adult attempting to return to childhood innocence. Says Kingma, “If you have ever returned to a childhood holiday haunt in the offseason, it’s likely you’ve discovered the sad realisation that the place barely resembles your idyllic memories. As grown ups we all yearn for a time and place where our biggest concerns were the sand in our bathers and the mosquito’s eating us alive.”
Barnett is slated to return the U.S. in May for an extensive tour, the majority of which is sold out… but fans are still able to catch her at Pitchfork Music Festival, as well as other festival dates, and Milwaukee-area fans (like us) can look forward to her gig opening for Belle & Sebastian on June 19.
