It’s safe to say that anticipation for Tame Impala‘s third album has reached its pinnacle. Earlier this week, a track list was leaked, as well as a supposed release date, by someone paying way too much attention to iTunes in a foreign country. Today, we have the confirmed track list (below) and release date for Currents, Tame Impala’s upcoming release for Interscope Records, releasing in the U.S. on July 17.
The album is available for pre-order at midnight tonight (Eastern Standard Time), and will include the three tracks we’ve heard from the group thus far as instant downloads (“Let It Happen” / “‘Cause I’m A Man” / “Disciples”), plus the track the group has shared with us today, “Eventually”
Currents was written, recorded and produced by frontman Kevin Parker in Western Australia. The album is a glimpse into the changes that have taken course in the singer and multi-instrumentalist’s life since the formation of Tame Impala five years ago. This motif has already appeared in all three of Tame Impala’s previously released songs from Currents, and the fourth holds true to this as well. Parker sings of a difficult emotional moment, and the lyrics are incredibly visceral: “Wish I could turn you back into a stranger / ‘Cause If I was never in your life / You wouldn’t have to change this / But I know that I’ll be happier / And I know you will too”
Not only are Parker’s lyrics taking center stage, but his vocals are as well. It’s difficult to say if the singer has become more confident in his own voice, or if the vocals are simply more prominent as a result of the tightened production in the guitars and other instruments, usually scuzzy and echoing in reverb. Regardless of Parker’s confidence level, it’s fairly clear that Currents will give us the clearest glimpse into the singer’s mind of any Tame Impala album to date.
