Bully is a musical outfit based out of Nashville, TN, but is definitely not making music stereotypically associated with the city. Sharp-edged, in-your-face indie rock like this usually comes from metropolises like New York or Los Angeles. Nashville usually produces feel-good southern rock, but Bully comes across like a balled-up fist capable of producing a welt on the side of your cheekbone.
Led by Alicia Boganno, Bully seems like an apt description for the singer’s songwriting style, which can be self-abrasive, and the anger felt within songs like “I Remember” (heard above) is typically directed at Boganno, herself. But I wouldn’t dare cross her.
Not only does Boganno provide Bully’s vocal and songwriting skills, she’s also the group’s guitarist, visionary, engineer and producer, well-versed in audio engineering techniques. While she maintains a distinct prowess in the studio, Bully has gained buzz with their live show, recently wow-ing audiences at SXSW, translating their studio sound directly to the stage.
“At this point in my life I always want everything I make to sound like we’re playing live,” Boganno explains. “That’s why I didn’t put any keyboards or any extra stuff on there. Some people don’t like that, but I had to go with my gut.”
Bully will release their debut LP, Feels Like, on June 23, via StarTime International (Columbia), and as you’d guess, it’s a deeply personal album. Feels Like is a coming-of-age album, all about figuring yourself out as an adult, which will provide listeners a glimpse at who Boganno truly is.
Bully will head out on a full US Tour, including some solo shows and others in support of Jeff The Brotherhood and Best Coast. Check out the dates below.
